Barton recognises the important role that our employees have in maintaining our status as a leading independent contractor. We place a great deal of emphasis on having a skilled labour force and see training either on the job or at formal courses as essential. We are particularly careful not to place an individual in a situation where they would not have the skills to work safely.

Therefore, there is a continuous assessment made of the skill base relative to the work in hand. Individuals are sent on training courses to acquire new skills as appropriate. Apprentices and trainees are placed on a development programme, with the colleges being used to advise B.I.S on the range and suitability of courses attended.
The Company, as an active member of the Construction Industry Federation, Construction Industry Training Board, Engineers Employer Federation and Lifting Equipment Engineers Association, benefits from invaluable up to date information and support.
Qualifications and competencies of our technicians and staff are managed using our bespoke project management software.
All training carried out is recorded in the BIS Training Matrix; details recorded against each member of staff include the course attended, the date of the course and the renewal or refresh date. The system raises alerts well before the expiry date. Scanned copies of up to date training certificates are included.

Ongoing assessment is monitored and recorded in the Competence Matrix. Each site staff member has an individual Competence Assessment form which is completed by the Site supervisors. The results of which are recorded on the Competency Matrix.
Clients have access to the technicians’ qualifications and competencies records assigned to a particular project through their dedicated secured on-line portal. It allows them to verify instantly that the technicians assigned to their project have the relevant and up to date levels of competency and expertise.
‘Barton Inspect’ allows our Operations Manager to schedule all projects. Thus, for example, all sites that are due for inspection appear in the schedule list, along with the technicians and their availability.
The list of technicians available is also linked to their qualifications and competencies so that only the operatives competent to carry out the work are listed.
